Education

Giving our children a good education is very important to our community. We have over 100 children who attend Houk Elementary School. Our community tries to support the work of our local teachers to provide a sound education to our kids. After graduating from elementary, our kids travel to other islands for junior and senior high schools such as Pattiw Junior High School, and to the main island of Weno to attend any number of the public and private high schools.

We've tried our best to provide a supportive learning environment to our children. Since the 1980's all the valedictorians and the salutatorians at the major public high school in Chuuk, Chuuk High School have consistently come from Houk Elementary School. And we are proud of that fact.

But there's so much we can do to support the work of our 6 teachers. Although our teachers are government employees, they put in much more than they are paid. In the past, Houk has been blessed with the incredible work of Peace Corp volunteers, but that is no longer available.

Our simple curriculum include math, English, science, and social studies. Although our classrooms are in a cement building that is nothing much more than a typhoon shelter with low ceiling and little circulation, we are trying to make it work for our children. Any help you can provide us will be appreciated.
