Faith

The Catholic Faith was first introduced to the small community of Houk in the early 1920’s by a group of Houkese residing in Saipan. After a while, another group from Dublon, an island in the Chuuk Lagoon, along with some local missionaries from the Mortlocks, a group of islands northwest of Houk, set foot on the island to proclaim the Good News. Jesuit priests later came to lead these small islands one of the most notable priest was Fr. John Kevin Fahey S.J. who the church building.

The first structure was built using large pieces of coral stones carved into blocks and plastered with a kind of mixture of lime and hardened coral pieces. The original building had thatch roofs. It was completed in 1954 and was renovated in 1965 with corrugated tin roof. Today, the same 30 ft. wide by 70 ft. long building is still used for the daily services although it is no longer large enough to accomodate the more than 400 people of Houk.

We have started fundraising efforts to build an entirely new church that can accomodate our growing population which swells to over 600 in the summertime when students return to Houk for their summer breaks. Even without the student population, the building is simply too small now to hold the community.

The growing population of Houk can no longer fit into our old and and run down church building. During services, people are forced to sit outside. The corrugated roof of the building are rusty and leaking badly. Our church was built back in the 50's (back end of the building noticable by 6 small windows) and enlarged in the 60's (front end of the building indicated by the 3 large side windows). Now, we need an entirely larger building to accomodate our growing population.
