Health

The isolated location of our island from the Chuuk State Hospital poses many health care challenges for us. The FSM government funded the building of a runway on Houk to provide some help for health evacuation. The problem is that we cannot afford the high cost of the airline that services our region.

We need a good Community Health Clinic that would not only service Houkese, but people from the neighboring islands in the Pattiw region. The small dispensary that the State government built for us in the early 80's has long been deemed unsafe. The lease on the land has run out and the land taken over by the original landowners. Our municipal government has purchased a piece of land (80 x 80 sq. ft) in the center of the villages for a new Health Clinic. Unfortunately, the State government has no funds to build one on Houk so we are turning to private funders to help us build a new dispensary.

We lack the basic over the counter medicine most take for granted elsewhere. We need dental care specialists to help us. We are in collaboration with the Micronesian Dental Support Project based in Santa Cruz, CA to help us and they are bringing a team of dentists with equipment in the Summer of 2007 to help us. If you are a dentist, please contact them to donate time, equipment, and support.

This is a view of the old dilapitated dispensary that the State government built for the people of Houk in the early 70's. It has long been too unsanitary and rundown. With private funding and help from people of goodwill, we would like to ask help to build a new dispensary on a piece of land that has already been secured by the Houk municipal government for this purpose.

VISION: We envision the building of a super dispensary that would be built on a 80x80 sq. ft land to include the following:

  1. waiting room
  2. beds for patients
  3. medical exam room
  4. lab
  5. pharmacy
  6. medicine

We would also like to invite medical groups, dentists, health professionals to visit our islands for a cultural experience in exchange for your assistance.
